How Often Should You Actually Get a Haircut? A Birmingham Barber’s Honest Answer

It’s one of the most common questions we get asked at Tom’s Gents — “How long can I leave it before coming back in?”

The honest answer depends on your haircut, your hair type, and honestly, how much you care. But there are some solid guidelines that’ll help you stay sharp between appointments.

The General Rule: 3 to 6 Weeks

For most men, every 3 to 4 weeks is the sweet spot. That’s often enough to keep the shape looking intentional, without hitting that awkward in-between stage where it’s grown out but not long enough to style differently.

If you’re rocking a skin fade or a tight taper, you’ll probably want to come in closer to every 2 to 3 weeks — fades grow out faster than you’d think, and the sharpness is the whole point.

Longer styles and softer cuts can go 5 to 6 weeks without looking unkempt. But if you’re letting it grow deliberately — going for a longer look — you should still come in for a shape-up every 4 to 6 weeks to keep it looking controlled.

How Your Hair Type Affects the Timeline

Thick hair grows out faster in volume, which means it can look overgrown sooner. If your hair is thick, lean towards the shorter end of whatever interval you’re working with.

Fine hair sits flatter and doesn’t bulk up as quickly, but the shape is more visible — meaning a grow-out can look messier faster, even if there isn’t much extra length.

Curly and coily hair is more forgiving on length, but the fade line becomes less defined over time. If you have a fade, the curl definition around the sides will soften within 3 to 4 weeks.

Signs You’ve Left It Too Long

Be honest with yourself. It’s time for a cut when:

• The back of your neck looks fuzzy or grown out

• Your fade has become a blur rather than a blend

• You’re spending longer styling it just to make it look acceptable

• You’re relying on a hat more often than you’d like to admit

The Investment Angle

Regular haircuts aren’t just about vanity — they’re an investment in how you present yourself. In a job interview, a first date, or a client meeting, your grooming signals how much you value the details. A sharp haircut is one of the most cost-effective confidence boosts there is.
